The double bridle consists of a Weymouth and a Bradoon. The Bradoon lies in the upper part of the horses mouth and the Weymouth underneath. The part of the mouth where the Bradoon lies is wider. Therefore it is important to choose the Bradoon slightly larger- approx 1/2 - 1cm than the Weymouth. Furthermore the mouthpiece of the Bradoon should be equal to the snaffle currently used.

The Weymouth must fit exactly in the horses mouth. If the cheeks are not very close to both sides of the horses mouth the bar might get blocked when pulling the reins or the horse catches an edge in the worst case.

The Weymouth affects different parts of the mouth and head. The potential effectiveness of the influence depends on the length of the upper and lower cheek parts.

The most popular lower cheek size 7cm. Weymouth bits with 5cm lower cheek are often called 'Baby Weymouth Bits'. This expression might imply that it is made for beginners but it is not. The riders aids and their effect are more direct and quicker due to the short cheeks. Nevertheless, the pressure on both lower jaw bones and poll is less effective with shorter cheeks due to the different leverage.

Generally, the Bradoon levels the horses head and the curb bit acts as an additional bridle. The rider must be able to use both reins seperately.

The space in the horses mouth is limited. Especially the palate which is flatter than we previously expected. When using a Weymouth with a high port there can be pressure on the sensetive palate when pulling the reins. We highly reccommend choosing a Weymouth that offers space for the tongue without squeezing the palate. Weymouths with a higher port should only be used by experienced riders.
